顶级英国大学非常喜欢学生修读传统的A Level科目，如数学，科学，语言，英语文学，历史，地理，经济学等等。
剑桥大学（以及很多其他名校）不太青睐那些非传统的A Level科目，如：
- Accounting 会计
- ICT 信息通讯技术
- Art and design 艺术与设计
- Leisure studies 休闲学
- Business studies 商务研究
- Media studies 媒体研究
- Communication studies 传媒学
- Music technology 音乐技术
- Dance 舞蹈
- Performance studies 表演学
- Design technology 设计技术
- Performing arts 表演艺术
- Drama/theatre studies 戏剧/剧场研究
- Photography 摄影学
- Film studies 电影研究
- Physical education 体育
- Health and social care 保健与社会关怀
