This degree will enable you to develop your career in one of the fastest growing global activities, by giving you a deeper understanding of the principles of communication systems and networks. It covers the design and analysis of modern telecommunications and data communication systems whether mobile, fixed-terrestrial or satellite based. The emphasis of the course is on practical application and design rather than intensive analytical detail.

You will study eight units on this course plus an individual project. Currently, the units are:
•Data Communications and Networking
•Network Design and Management
•Communications Security
•Project Research and Planning
•Microwave and Wireless Technology
•Mobile and Satellite Systems
•Digital Modulation and Coding
•Communication System Analysis
The course ends with a four-month individual project in which you apply your knowledge to a significant communications system or network planning problem. Projects are tailored to your individual interests and may take place in our own laboratories or, by agreement, in industry.
MSc by Extended Project offers an alternative study mode, based on an extended project and is available to applicants who already have a specialist background in the field of study.
This involves two units from the above plus the following:

•Research Methods
•Extended Individual Project
教学与评估 Teaching and Assessment：
You will be taught using a mixture of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and project work. Each unit typically has about 30 hours scheduled for lectures and supervised activities. In addition, you will need to spend significant time in our electronic, communications and computer laboratories, as well as in private study as directed by lecturers.
Lecturers generally spend part of the scheduled time in tutorial sessions to help you with any technical aspects of the course of which you are unsure. You will also have a personal tutor who can help with any other personal or academic problems should they arise.
Assessment is geared towards the subject matter in a way that encourages a deeper understanding and allows you to develop your skills. It includes examinations, assessed coursework, laboratory work and a dissertation that can often be linked with industry.

Successful graduates have been sought-after by a wide variety of employers in telecommunications, data communications, broadcasting and the internet, with interests ranging from overall system design to the more detailed development of RF and data subsystems. The range of careers is ever widening and includes data network design, wireless networks, mobile, terrestrial and satellite systems and their applications in broadcasting, telephoning, business communications and the internet. As well as design, many graduates from the course will develop their careers in technical management and engineering project management.
