课程特征 Course Features:
Our courses aim to provide you with a framework within which the understanding of core disciplines in civil engineering can be extended. It will also give you an opportunity to study subjects of growing importance with which the civil engineer is confronted in the changing economic and environmental climate. Overall, it will increase your professional ability to contribute to organisational and managerial effectiveness within your employing organisation by developing your general competence within the context of your own experience, current and future needs and the needs of your organisation.

课程内容 Course Content :

This degree includes a range of units which are taken in three stages over an academic year and include both core (mandatory) units and optional units. Core units are dependant on the course, but every effort is made to ensure that you have a choice of optional units.

Stage one (October to January)
You will study four or five of the following units:
•Geotechnology (core subject for all courses): embankments, reinforced earth, ground improvements, geosynthetics and contamination containment

•General Management in Construction (core subject for all courses): management principles within the construction industry, including planning, organising, staffing, leading and controlling

•Advanced Structural Analysis and Design (core subject for all courses): design brief, design strategy, critical evaluation of alternatives and applied design

•Environmental Management (core subject for Civil Engineering with Environmental Engineering, optional for all other courses): environmental impact assessment, water resources, wastewater treatment, air and land contamination

•Management of Traffic (optional): control and management of traffic, environmental impacts and solutions/ remedial measures

•Project Management (optional): understanding and critical awareness of project management processes and their contribution to project success

•Project Economics and Finance (optional): understanding and critical awareness of economic and financial constraints in the management of construction projects

•Projects and the Law (optional): understandin
g and critical awareness of legal processes and constraints in the management of construction projects

•Construction Material Engineering (core for Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering and Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering; optional for all other courses): understanding, evaluation and performance of structures

•Tunnels and Underground Excavation (optional for Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering): this unit covers stress strain relationships for isotropic and orthotropic material, as well as geological and hydrogeological appraisal for tunnelling purposes

Stage two (February to June)
You will study three or four of the following units:
•Research Methods (core subject for all courses): principles and procedures of data collection, analysis and reporting

•Life Cycle of Structures (core for Civil Engineering with Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering, optional for all other courses); the long-term economic, environmental and social influences of constructed facilities within a sustainable context

•Shoreline Management (optional): the philosophies, methods and techniques of coastal defence and protection

•Strategic Management in Construction (optional): organisational structures and roles, management of change, marketing, competitor analysis, international strategy and alliances

•Project Management Software (optional): understanding project management software, its limitations and effectiveness

•Project Management Tools and Techniques (optional): understanding project management techniques, its limitations and effectiveness

•Fundamentals of Contaminated Land (optional for Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering): topics covered include the framework of contaminated land investigation, remediation and redevelopment, made ground and landfill

•Ground Engineering (core for Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering and optional for all other courses): introduces the fundamental design principles associated with common geotechnical elements encountered on civil and building engineering projects, using a real civil engineering project

•Waste Disposal and Remediation (optional for all courses): topics covered include surface and groundwater contamination, sources of contamination and mine waste disposal

•Rock Slope Stability and Surface Excavation (optional for Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering): this unit covers limit equilibrium analysis of plane, wedge and toppling failures, the influence of groundwater and effective stress, composite failures, stabilisation and remedial measures and rock excavation

•Ground Investigation and Assessment (optional for all courses): this unit covers common intrusive and non-intrusive methods used in site investigation works for both construction and contaminated land studies, plus geotechnical risk management

•Groundwater Hydrology (optional for all courses): the concepts of groundwater occurrence and movement, covering aquifer yields and storage in terms of lithological properties and hydraulic head

Stage three (July to September)
To gain a Master's award, you will have to complete an independent project selected from an area of your own choice. The project includes:
•problem identification
•definition of objectives
•research execution within time and cost constraints
•critical evaluation of results
•formulation of conclusions

This project is normally carried out in the summer semester.

教学与评估 Teaching and Assessment:
Teaching on these courses focuses on small lecture groups, seminar and discussion groups, and importantly independent learning strategies which tutorials will help you develop. Assessment includes both examination and continuous coursework and practicals. Full details of assessment for each module and their scheduling will be available at the start of the course.

You will also be required to complete a dissertation or extended assignments to gain a Master’s degree, which will be supervised by an appropriate member of staff.

Staffing reflects the interdisciplinary approach we take to postgraduate study. Most of our staff on these courses have over fifteen years of teaching and research experience. Staff research interests cover a range of related issues and concerns, which are developed through these courses.

Attendance is offered in full-time (one year) to ensure flexibility and maximize convenience. Each of the three stages of these courses is contained within an academic semester, the first two stages generally being delivered through formal tuition and stage three through personal research.

职业机会 Career Opportunities:
Our courses offer a qualification that is recognised throughout the UK, Europe and much of the developed world. They will help you in obtaining employment and the additional knowledge will help speed your career progression. Within the UK, past students have secured employment with world-renowned engineering consultancies and contractors.
