Cinema and television are high profile and pervasive forms of cultural expression, representation and reflection within contemporary society. This MA programme addresses the significance of these media within the context of social formation and social change, foregrounding their importance in relation to questions of identity, power, conflict, desire and emotion. While there is a strong emphasis on British and American film and television in the modules, the programme will also draw upon a wide range of ideas, insights and examples from the study of what are increasingly global moving image media.
The programme offers students a thorough grounding in the major conceptual and methodological approaches to the study and analysis of cinema and television as aesthetic works, commercial commodities, sites of pleasure and affect, and as social data. It also provides opportunities for closer study of specific examples of cinema and television derived from the research expertise of the programme’s teaching staff, all of whom are internationally recognised scholars. Students will also engage with the importance of story telling as a common theme in film and television studies, but also as a bridge to other interests and work going on in the department including theatre studies and production work across all three media and beyond.

Modules
Cinema & Society: Theory and Method
This module introduces students to the basic concepts of film analysis with particular reference to the relations between cinema and its socio-cultural context. It thus involves consideration of significant traditions in film theory (eg subject positioning theory, cognitivism, etc.) as well as materials drawn from other disciplinary contexts (eg sociology, cultural studies, media research, etc.).
Case Study Workshops in Cinema and Society
This module is structured in combinations of two-week and/or four-week units each focused upon a particular case study area. Case studies may be of specific periods and social contexts, or of particular cinematic traditions or forms (eg German Cinema 1919-1926; British Cinema 1959-1965; Popular Hollywood Genre; Social Functions of the Star System). Case study provision may vary from year to year according to staffing, and as the department grows it will be possible to provide a degree of optionalisation under this rubric.
Television & Society: Theory and Method
This module will introduce students to the basic concepts of television analysis with particular reference to the relations between television and its socio-cultural context. In as much as television studies have, in part, grown out of film studies, but have also been significantly formed by traditions of media research and cultural studies, this module will build on the materials introduced in Cinema & Society: Theory and Method while also drawing upon further analytical traditions.

Case studies may be of specific periods and social contexts, or of particular television traditions or forms (eg British Television Drama of the 1960s; Soap Opera; Sport on Television; The Rise of 'Reality' TV). Case study provision may vary from year to year according to staffing, and as the department grows it will be possible to provide a degree of optionalisation under this rubric.
Theatre/Film/Television: Core Issues
This module is taken by all TFT MA/MSc students over two terms. Core issues offers a unique opportunity for students to enter into dialogue across the three media. It is designed to stimulate common enterprise and to establish an arena of intellectual discovery and artistic experiment. The module explores areas of critical intersection in all three disciplines and will focus on matters such as narrative representation, the role of sound and visual image, the relationship between text and image, differences in acting and directing techniques, and the impact of new technologies. There will be an emphasis on learning about how certain aspects of specific disciplines might complement and enrich our understanding of the others.
