课程特征 Course Features:

The Manchester MA in Screen Studies is a diverse and flexible programme of study, providing students with opportunities to study areas of screen theory, practice, history and culture. It caters for students wishing to enhance their artistic and professional careers as well as those seeking to prepare for doctoral study. The course provides opportunities for students who are new to the subject area to establish a foundation in the discipline as well as those who wish to pursue further study. It prepares students for doctoral study and/or employment in the screen, media and creative industries. This is an interdisciplinary MA, taught collaboratively between the Drama subject area and other subject areas across the Faculty.

The course builds on links between the University of Manchester and professional contexts and communities in Greater Manchester and beyond. It encourages the research and practice of screen culture that is creative, engages in non-traditional and/or community sites, and combines artistic exploration with a social focus. We support cultural research that engages with issues relating to transformation, critique and social responsibility.

课程内容 Course Content :

The MA Screen Studies is a flexible programme, with 60 credits of taught and structured delivery and a range of opportunities for students to construct a bespoke programme from within the specialist areas of Drama and Faculty of Humanities at the University of Manchester. The programme is intellectually challenging and practically diverse, providing an ideal pathway for continuing professional work and/or preparation for doctoral study. Building on local and regional links to professional partners, it offers students an opportunity to engage in and benefit from ongoing research in the subject area.

Core elements include a research methods course and an advanced screen theory and practice course (totalling 60 credits). You then select a further 60 credits drawn from combinations of the following: a `Professional Practices' course, offering an opportunity to gain experience in a `real-world' screen and media industry context; a number of MA study options; and a `directed reading' course. Finally, you complete a 12-15,000-word dissertation on an area of your choice. Your dissertation can involve practical research, with a shorter written component accompanied by a practical project.

Previous students have conducted research in a range of subjects, including representations of the body in contemporary `death media'; music and rock operas; ideology in contemporary science fiction film; French horror; spirituality in Japanese anime; and practice-based research in the use of subjective cinema and the single-shot film.

Manchester offers the prospective student unparalleled opportunities to develop their skills in a range of screen media contexts and creative industries. In the North West, we have established connections with the Cornerhouse, the BBC at MediaCityUK and independent production companies. Our unique `Professional Practices' option allows students to gain experience in a professional environment.

教学与评估 Teaching and Assessment:

The Manchester MA in Screen Studies aims to enhance students' capacity to engage in advanced research and practice in screen, both on an independent basis and in collaboration with their peers. The programme will prepare students for further academic study and/or employment in the field of screen and media industry. It involves the study of a comprehensive and unique range of specialist areas within screen studies and will enable students to interrogate their own, their peers' and a range of professional practices. The MA fosters students' skills in critically evaluating current and advanced scholarship and practice in applied theatre. Students learn how to develop critiques of that scholarship, and offer original, independent responses.

Following a mandatory first semester, students are free to construct their MA programme from a diverse range of options, including established study options within the subject area and Faculty of Humanities, a `Professional Practices' option and a directed reading option (enabling you to construct your own module with the careful supervision of specialist staff). This flexibility enables you to construct a programme that best fits your post-graduation plans.

The mandatory first semester (totalling 60 credits) includes a research methods course and a critical screen theories and cultures course. You then select a further 60 credits drawn from a combinaton of the following options: a `Professional Practices' course offering an opportunity to gain experience in a `real-world' screen media context, a number of MA study options, and a `directed reading' course (individual screen study option with 1 to 1 staff-student supervision). Study options include (subject to staff availability): History and Ideology in Film Music; Video Production: Docufiction; Fantasy Cinema; American Cinema and Politics; Queer Cinema; Filming War; Black on Screen; Bollywood Cinema; Authorship and the studio system; Gender and sexuality in contemporary French cinema; Representing the Holocaust: the case of post-war German cinema; Spanish cinema since 1980; Identity and visual representation; Science and entertainment media; Critical theory. Finally, you will complete a 15,000-word dissertation on an area of your choice. Your dissertation can be a dissertation by practice, which involves a shorter written component and accompanied by a practical project.

Students are taught in seminars, small group tutorials, workshops and surgeries, offering opportunities for lively and engaged discussions. One-to-one supervision is offered on all dissertations. Assessment is primarily by written assignment: essays, reports, self-assessments and dissertations.

The final submission is a 15,000-word dissertation on a topic chosen in consultation with the dissertation supervisor. Most units have a practical component, although assessment is generally through various kinds of written work, including essays, log-books, evaluation reports, project critiques and practice analysis.
