Want to know more about the histories of Latin America? Covering a wide chronological range, from indigenous politics to colonial encounters, from the struggles for independence to 21st-century globalization, this programme could be for you.
The MA, intended for graduates of Modern Languages, History and other Arts and Social Sciences programmes, aims to provide a broad comparative approach to the many histories of Latin America (national, indigenous, colonial, postcolonial modern) with specific understanding of individual countries (especially Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil). This approach, coupled with a core unit investigating Critical Questions in Latin American History, will enable you to place existing knowledge and research projects about one or more countries into a wider perspective. Language skills are integral to the programme, with units in English, Spanish or Portuguese offered at a variety of levels.

Dissertation
A 15,000-word dissertation. Some funding is available for travel to Latin America to conduct research. We have agreements with Latin American universities in Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Brazil which can be utilised for research in Latin American archives and for students of colonial history, links in Spain, where many of the colonial archives are kept.
