Overview
The programme is equally popular with mid-career professionals and recent graduates seeking a vocational qualification. We like to be flexible and to encourage applicants with different career paths and alternative qualifications. It is our experience that a wide range of academic and national backgrounds and professional experience leads to stimulating and lively debate, and recent students include for example, senior landscape officer, historic estate manager, company director, project manager, lecturer in horticulture, archaeologist, chartered surveyor, planner, and landscape consultant. What we do require is a lively, thoughtful, and enthusiastic knowledge of, and interest in, the subject area.

Programme structure
The programme starts each October and to enable a greater opportunity for participation and flexible learning it is offered as one year full-time, two years part-time, four years extended part-time and single modules can also be taken for Continuing Professional Development purposes (the CPD route is not assessed).
The taught content is delivered over two semesters ending in June. Teaching takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays and part-time students select either to attend on a Wednesday or Friday. This requires attendance at the university either one day or two days per week over two semesters. Each semester contains eleven weeks of teaching, so the commitment for attending the lectures, seminars and visits by the part-time route is just 22 days (11 days extended part-time) or 44 days full-time.
Units are taught over two semesters: History and Theory; Survey and Assessment in semester 1; Conservation and Management and The Legislative Framework in semester 2. Teaching and study visits in all units involve contact with a wide range of leading academics, practitioners and conservation bodies as lecturers, workshop tutors and field visit leaders.
Coursework for the programme has clearly defined parameters relating to each unit subject area and is designed to develop the corresponding knowledge and skills that enable the student to interpret the landscape heritage. The development of transferable skills underpins all coursework and these include practical techniques including survey and recording procedures, technical and field skills, archival research and documentation, interpretation of historical evidence and coherent presentation of results. Students produce essays, written reports and case studies with notes from study visits which develop an understanding of garden and landscape history and conservation philosophy. All coursework is handed in to a given timetable, and is assessed.
Case studies provide an opportunity to see examples of conservation skills and practical project work. They offer a body of experience which will enable students to make decisions about which of the methods taught in the other units to apply in particular situations in order to manage the complexity of historic sites effectively. Practitioners need to be able to solve real problems by balancing conflicting issues or priorities and reach considered conclusions on the ground within budgets and programme and this will be achieved through theory, practice and live project examples. The case studies are based on seminars and field visits and will cover the philosophy upon which the conservation work is based, the principles involved and a study of the techniques and technologies employed.
