The course is offered as a series of modules taught by staff based in the university and Techniques. Students take a pair of ‘foundation’ modules that introduce the key ideas about science, technology and society that underpin the course and the main research methods needed for the dissertation. In addition, students take three ‘core’ modules in which the main elements of the scheme — Science in the Media; Visitor Studies and Reporting Science — are developed. The sixth module is optional, allowing students o pursue their own specialist interest. Optional modules vary but include a selection from social sciences, media studies and the participatory ‘Presenting Science’ based in Techniques. Assessment of these modules is by a combination of coursework tasks, presentations and class tests. The MSc is completed by a dissertation on a topic chosen by the student.
